The Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) programme is designed to give children access to a free pre-school year of appropriate programme-based activities in the year before they start primary school. Participation in a pre-school programme provides children with their first formal experience of early learning; the starting-point of their educational and social development outside the home. Children who avail of pre-school are more likely to be ready for school and a formal learning and social environment.

In general, children are eligible for the ECCE scheme if they are aged over 3 years 2 months and less than 4 years 7 months on 1 September of the year that they will be starting. The programme is being expanded starting in September 2016 to offer children Free preschool hours from the age of 3 years. The total number of ECCE weeks a child can avail of will depend on the child’s birth date and the age at which the child begins primary school. There will now be 3 points during the year when a child can enrol in the scheme.

To avail of ECCE Programme from: Children born between the following dates (inclusive):
September 2016 (Until June 2017) 1st January 2012-31st August 2013
